My college education started at Arizona State University. I attended from Fall 2010 to Spring 2013. I started my time there as a Theater major but shifted to Elementary Education. My switch was due to a realization with in myself that even though I love the theater world, acting had become more of a hobby. I begrudgingly realized that in comparison to my peers I was not willing to sacrifice everything in order to be successful. I joined a sorority fall of 2010 which I think was part of my decision as well. Joining Gamma Phi Beta was transformational and helped me grow tremendously, and I knew moving forward I was going to have to make a decision. In the end I wasn't willing to give up my sisters for my art, because even though it is important to me human connection will always for me surpass artistic invention.
I needed a major that still allowed me creative freedom but also allowed me to find balance in my work and personal life. Enter Education: When I entered into education I was hyper-passionate about my desire to create a future classroom environment that would lead to passionate students. My goal for the classroom was exactly the same as my ideal workplace. I wanted my future classroom to foster creativity, within a community whose goal was collaboration, transparency, and passion. I had grand ideas about creating a place where I could develop a passion in students encouraging them in their pursuits. This idea came quickly spiraling to the floor though once I transferred.
My transfer to Kennesaw State University came on the heals of my Grandfather's passing when I decided to move across the country to live with my Grandmother. I entered into KSU as an education major but within two semesters I saw myself slipping further away from my original ideas of a creative classroom and falling instead into the hands of bureaucracy. Once I got hands on experience in the classroom and advice from teachers themselves I discovered that teaching elementary school really wasn't my calling. But honestly I did not feel like I had time to waste discovering my new calling. I knew what I didn't want to do and that was enough for me for now.
I knew I needed to find a major that would get me a bachelors degree but at this point I had completed four years and still felt like I was at square one. I took a semester off to work, feeling as though I had reached a dead end, but I very quickly decided I needed to go back to school to get my degree. When I discovered that Kennesaw had an Integrative Studies program I knew I had found my major. I met with an an advisor who helped me set up a path that allowed me to use my already accumulated credits and graduate in just two semesters. And I have!
Graduated Cum Laude from Kennesaw State University: December, 17th 2015 Member of Golden Key Society Alumna of Gamma Phi Beta
I know that my graduation from undergrad is not the end of my academic life and I will go back and get my Masters and Doctorate at some point but I want to get a few years of full time work experience before going back. Eventually I would like to end my career teaching at a University.
